Grand Hotel Timeo, Belmond’s iconic Sicilian retreat that overlooks the Ionian sea and Mount Etna, has officially reopened following an extensive restoration and redesign that reimagines one of Italy’s most celebrated luxury hotels.
Originally opening in 1873 and located adjacent to Taormina’s ancient Greek Theatre, the hotel has long been regarded as a landmark of Mediterranean hospitality. The reopening comes as Sicily continues to experience heightened international interest following the global success of HBO’s The White Lotus, which showcased Taormina’s dramatic landscapes and elevated the destination’s profile among luxury travellers worldwide.
At the heart of the transformation is the unveiling of Villa Timeo, an intimate 21-room residence redesigned by acclaimed French interior designer Laura Gonzalez. The new interiors combine Sicilian craftsmanship, vibrant Mediterranean influences and refined contemporary detailing, while preserving the property’s historic character and panoramic setting.
The reopening will hopefully strengthen Taormina’s position as one of Europe’s leading luxury destinations, while also generating new employment opportunities across the local hospitality sector. Belmond has confirmed plans to recruit approximately 90 staff members ahead of the 2026 season.
