WYCLEF JEAN TO HEADLINE THE 2026 BRITISH MUSEUM BALL
Grammy Award-winning artist, producer and composer Wyclef Jean will headline the 2026 British Museum Ball, performing beneath the iconic glass roof of the Museum’s Great Court on Saturday 17 October.
The Fugees founding member will bring his pioneering blend of hip-hop, soul, reggae and global sounds to the British Museum for an extraordinary evening where art, history, fashion and performance come together.
Jean’s performance will form a centrepiece of the second annual British Museum Ball, which this year is being conceived by internationally acclaimed artist and designer Es Devlin CBE RDI, Artistic Director for 2026.
Wyclef Jean said: “I’ve always believed that to understand where we’re going, we have to understand where we come from. History and music both carry the stories of humanity. To bring them together at the British Museum is something very special.”
A founding member of the Fugees, Jean rose to international prominence with the group’s landmark 1996 album The Score, which became a global phenomenon and won two Grammy Awards.
As a solo artist, he has released eight albums, including the Grammy-nominated The Carnival, while his career as a songwriter and producer has seen him work on some of the biggest songs in contemporary music, including Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie and Santana’s Maria Maria. His influence has since extended far beyond music into technology, education and philanthropy, establishing him as a major global cultural figure.
Dr Nicholas Cullinan OBE, Director of the British Museum, said: “Wyclef Jean’s music embodies the spirit of cultural connection at the heart of this year’s Ball. His pioneering approach to music and culture over the past 40 years has brought together influences, traditions and audiences from across the world. We are delighted to welcome him this year to perform in the Great Court, where his music will bring the Ball’s themes of creativity and connection to life.”
Under Es Devlin’s artistic direction, the 2026 Ball will take inspiration from three extraordinary cultural moments at the British Museum this autumn: the once-in-a-millennium loan of the Bayeux Tapestry from France, a special display marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, and a landmark exhibition exploring 2,000 years of Korean creativity.
Connecting all three will be red, the theme and visual identity of this year’s Ball and the earliest pigment known to have been used by humans in artistic expression.
The colour runs through each of the Museum’s major autumn displays, from the embroidered wool of the Bayeux Tapestry and the stripes of the American flag to the rich red hues found across centuries of Korean art. Known for creating some of the world’s most spectacular cultural environments, Devlin’s career has spanned theatre, art, opera and major global performances, including Olympic ceremonies and stadium shows.
Es Devlin CBE RDI said: “The Ball will help the British Museum continue to offer over six million people each year free, immediate access to two million years of human history and I am honoured to play my part.” This year, Igor Tulchinsky, Founder, Chairman and CEO of WorldQuant, will serve as honorary chair of the Ball in recognition of his support for The Bayeux Tapestry.
The 2026 event follows the success of the inaugural British Museum Ball in 2025, which welcomed nearly 900 high-profile guests, 70% of whom were new to the Museum, and raised more than £2.5 million towards its international partnerships.
Proceeds from this year’s Ball will support the British Museum’s ambitious Masterplan, one of the most significant cultural redevelopment projects currently being undertaken anywhere in the world. The transformation aims to reimagine the Museum and the way millions of visitors experience its collection for generations to come.
Additional donations will also support the Museum’s commitment to widening access for young people, helping to provide a free packed lunch for every schoolchild visiting The Bayeux Tapestry as part of an organised school trip.
The British Museum Ball 2026 takes place on Saturday 17 October 2026 at the British Museum, London.
