A highlight of the exhibition is Warhol’s Ads series, presented in the UK for the first time as a complete body of work. Comprising both silkscreen prints and a set of ten original canvases, the series reimagines iconic advertising imagery, from Apple computers and Volkswagen cars to Chanel No. 5 transforming familiar commercial symbols into vivid works of art. The display underscores Warhol’s pioneering exploration of the relationship between art and consumer culture.

The gallery’s 29 New Bond Street will showcase Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans, accompanied by archival material and a three-dimensional Campbell’s Soup Box commissioned in 1986.

Meanwhile, an immersive installation at 148 New Bond Street explores Warhol’s influence on the 1980s New York art scene, featuring Andy Mouse by Keith Haring—a vibrant tribute portraying Warhol as a pop-cultural icon.

Information for the exhibition states: “In Andy Warhol’s Ads series of 1985, the viewer is invited to ‘extract’ the advertisement from the imagery presented and, instead, treat it as a work of art.

“Here, Warhol revisits his work in commercial illustration from the early 1950s, appropriating iconic brands, logos and images as the foundation for the series.”

It adds: “Warhol’s selection of images for the Ads series embodied some of the most powerful corporations in America at the time, such as Mobilgas, Paramount Pictures, Disney, and Apple Macintosh.”

Additional highlights include celebrated portfolios depicting figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth II, Chairman Mao, and Muhammad Ali, alongside the much-loved Endangered Species series. Rare original works will also be on view, including Warhol’s portrait of Pelé once owned by the football legend himself as well as monumental late paintings such as Mount Vesuvius and a striking canvas featuring a Rado watch, created in the final months of the artist’s life.

Andy Warhol: Beyond the Brand open on 18 January 2024 at Halcyon, Mayfair, London.
