Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and some of the biggest names in world tennis descended on The O2 for a spectacular weekend of sport, entertainment and celebrity guests as Team Europe defeated Team World 13-5.

London once again became the centre of the tennis world this weekend as the Laver Cup returned to The O2, bringing together some of the sport’s biggest names for three days of high-energy competition between Team Europe and Team World.

The ninth edition of the Laver Cup saw Team Europe reclaim the trophy with a 13-5 victory, securing its sixth title in the competition’s history. Alexander Zverev delivered the decisive win on Sunday, defeating Team World’s Learner Tien 7-6(3), 6-3 to put Europe beyond reach.

Led by captain Yannick Noah, Team Europe featured a formidable line-up including Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik, Flavio Cobolli and Rafael Jodar, while Andre Agassi’s Team World included Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Francisco Cerundolo, Learner Tien, Brandon Nakashima and Alexander Bublik.

The tournament delivered everything that has made the Laver Cup one of the most distinctive events on the international tennis calendar: world-class players, dramatic matches, a striking black court and a team format that transforms the traditionally individual sport of tennis into a weekend of collective rivalry.

Europe began strongly on Friday, ending the opening day with a 3-1 advantage. Ruud opened Europe’s account before Jodar defeated Bublik and Alcaraz partnered Mensik to victory in the evening doubles. But Team World ensured the contest was far from straightforward. Saturday produced some of the weekend’s most memorable tennis, including an extraordinary comeback from Alex de Minaur, who overturned a one-set deficit against Zverev to win 2-6, 7-6(5), 11-9 and temporarily put Team World ahead 5-3.

Later that evening, Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz produced one of the matches of the tournament, with the Spaniard saving two match points before taking a thrilling 6-3, 4-6, 13-11 victory. The result helped swing momentum back towards Europe heading into the final day.

Sunday belonged to Team Europe. Mensik and Cobolli extended the side’s advantage in the opening doubles before Zverev stepped onto the black court and completed the job against Tien, sparking celebrations from the European bench and securing a 13-5 final score.

Created in honour of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, the Laver Cup has established itself as a unique fixture in the sporting calendar by bringing six of Europe’s leading players together to face six players representing the rest of the world. The scoring format increases the stakes as the weekend progresses, with matches worth one point on Friday, two on Saturday and three on Sunday. The first team to reach 13 points wins the Laver Cup.

The tournament brought together generations of tennis royalty, with Roger Federer and Rod Laver among those in attendance. Federer’s return to The O2 was particularly poignant, coming almost exactly four years after he played the final match of his professional career at the same venue. The stands also attracted an impressive collection of famous faces. Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted alongside Federer, while Sir Ian McKellen joined Rod Laver, Thierry Henry spent time with Sir Andy Murray and singer Seal took to the court to perform the coin toss during an opening session.

For London, it was another reminder of the city’s ability to stage the world’s biggest sporting occasions. With global tennis stars on court, legends of the game watching from the sidelines and famous faces filling the stands, the Laver Cup turned The O2 into one of the capital’s hottest tickets of the weekend.

Team Europe now leads the overall Laver Cup series 6-3, with the competition heading back to Team World territory in Los Angeles in 2027.
